I'm looking for a high quality surround AV receiver that is actually "Made In Japan"?

All the high end AV equipment out there (Sony, Denon, Marantz, etc.) are made in China, Malaysia, and the Phillipines with cheap, inferior parts that will break in 2-5 years. I was hoping there is a solidly built AV Surround receiver out there that is still made in Japan with solid, quality parts and electronics.

THX sound is optional, HDMI optional. Model numbers would be great. I just want a true Japanese-built surround receiver that%26#39;s built like a tank.

Answer:

The Denon AVR2807

It says MADE IN JAPAN under the serial number in this photo of the back of the receiver.

http://www.crutchfield.com/s-40ivzagqs9o... try Nakamichi, Onkyo, Yamaha, all their higher end stuff is made in Japan But no receiver will ever be as good as a component system with a pre amp and individual amps to power the system. you cant run exotic THX speakers off a receiver because most just handle 6 ohms minimum but out of the 3 best bet would be the Yamaha next Onkyo Well, I believe Onkyo is, and it%26#39;s a very high-quality brand. What do the Japanese buy when they want high end audio.......American made.

It%26#39;s really true. Of course you have to pay for it, but some things are worth it. Go for Onkyo. It manufactures really a trouble free home theatre system. The speakers are, however, manufactured in Malaysia.I use the system of Onkyo for past 7 years with utmost satisfaction.

I'm looking for a Panasonic DVD recorder to replace my VHS recorder, which model is best?

I really like the look of the Panasonic ones, and my VHS recorder was a Panasonic (it%26#39;s lasted nearly ten years, amazing considering it has been used almost daily!) so I want to stick to the brand. I will be looking at ex-display or 2nd hand items because I can%26#39;t afford new, I just want something that will replace my video recorder effectively and efficiently. I find it really difficult finding what I want on review sites, they always seem interested in the latest and most expensive models and probably judge them on much higher standards than are necessary for my needs, I%26#39;m just Joe Average and not a home cinema perfectionist freak.

Suggestions on what to look for, in-depth knowledge, or personal experience is most welcome!

PS Component AV I/O (phono) is a must.

Answer:

I bought a Panasonic DVD-recorder about 6 months ago after some decently extensive research. I am also a fan of Panasonic for the quality of their products.

I bought the DMR-EH50. Many DVD recorders out there, especially the less expensive ones, do NOT contain a Hard drive allowing you to record first to the hard drive and then to a DVD disc. I HIGHLY recommend getting a model with a hard drive (like this one). It doesn%26#39;t have to be huge, just something. This allows you to record many hours of programming which is really helpful. Not only can you record many hours, but you can do it in high quality. Just like your VCR has quality settings for SP, LP, SLP, the DVD recorder has somethingn similar. The DMR-EH50 has 4 settings, SLP, LP, SP, and XP. XP being the best, you will hardly notice a difference between the recording and original tv. The lower settings give you much longer recording time, but the quality will go down. I try to use XP as much as possible. If you use a recorder without a hard drive, you will need to worry about putting discs into it. What happens if you want to record 4 shows while you%26#39;re at work? You either have to use 1 disc, and a very Low recording setting (LP = about 4 hours), yeilding fairly poor quality. OR, you can get all 4 shows onto the hard drive in the best Quality XP setting and not worry about discs. Then later on, you can record each show onto its own disc. (you can still decide to put all 4 shows on 1 disc if you wanted when you dub from hard drive to disc).

I'm looking for a replacement remote for a sharp dvhr300h without getting ripped off! any ideas?

Answer:

hi you can get universal remotes from argos or any leading electrical shop. You programme it to your appliance. BUT 1 FROM ME £300 (may not work) only jokin ask them in curry%26#39;s, comet, argos or some electrical place. Here in the UK , there is a type of universal remote contol - all in one, three in one, four in one etc.

These tend to be TV,Video, Satelite, Digibox etc.

These are programmed by entering a number from the remote control instruction book.

I would expect to pay £10 to £150 for one - models vary.

Try your local Currys.digital or comet store.

Answer:

I'm looking for DVDs with GREAT Surround Sound for demo purposes - Stuff that's Old and New

Looking for scenes that can be used to demonstrate surround sound for training classes for employees and consumers. Stuff that is exciting, something that made you turn when you heard it, something that made you think, WOW that was awesome.

Not the lobby scene from the Matrix, or stuff that is overdone and talked about.

Feel free to make a long list.

Thank you.

Answer:

Over the Hedge - When RJ and Verne were trying to escape from a menacing dog, while dragging their wagon-full of food.

They end up accidentally dragging a propane tank from a barbecue. When the tank blew up and became a rocket, I was

in awe of the sound.

Minority Report - When detective Anderton(Tom Cruise) was being pursued by guys on futuristic jet-packs out to arrest him.

They ended up crashing into some apartments and broke through

walls and ceilings. Crazy sequence full of amazing sound.

The Bourne Identity - The car chase on Paris streets with the

Mini.

Lost in Space - The first space dogfighting scene.

Sound coming from all directions with nice explosions.

A Beautiful Mind - Basically, every scene when John Nash (Russel Crowe) was having paranoid delusions.

X-Men 2 - When their Jet was being chased and fired on with missiles by fighter planes.

Another scene from this movie is:

when the dam at Alkali Lake(or Alkalai, I forgot the spelling) breaks. WoW!

Spiderman 2 - The sequence when Spiderman tries to stop an out of control train.

I'm looking for DVDs with GREAT Surround Sound for demo purposes.?

Not the typical Master and Commander, or U571, or 5th Element. All that stuff is overdone. I%26#39;m looking for particular scenes in movies that the surround experience really brings you in. Explosions, Gun Fire, Water, Storms, Kid Friendly Movies also, anything that when you sat there and watched it you were amazed. Please try to be a little specific to the scene as well, in case I haven%26#39;t seen the movie so that I can find it. I%26#39;m looking for demos that can be done during surround sound training classes for retail employees and customers.

Thank you for your time. And feel free to make a huge list too.

Answer:

Well... I have a few that I can suggest.

1 - Top Gun (at the beginning scene after the intro when the fight-

ers creep into the picture from the side).

2 - Dragonheart (when the dragon circles the guy in the field -a

true reference for a surround demo! It%26#39;s right after the dragon

swims in the river and peaks his head out to see some delici-

ous lambs browsing in the field.)

3 - The Matrix (in the 1st episode when they are in the lobby and

they bring huge guns out of their trench coats and begin firing.

Right when the scene starts, there is an thunderous bass peak

and then you hear the shells drop on the ground.)

4 - The Fugative (the huge train wreck scene, when they are

hauling the inmates to prison)

5 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (actually, that%26#39;s not the movie,

I'm looking for help to find the tv codes of a Luke Skywalker lightsaber univesversal remote fro

Answer:

There is an auto search feature on there that should help you find the codes. A menu will come up and you can get the codes from there. If that doesn%26#39;t work there is a toll free hotline that you can call (should be on the remote or with the packaging if you still have it).

I'm looking for surround sound for around $300 dollars any suggestions. need it for dvd and cd,

Answer:

Try Best Buy, they have a lot of systems that include reciever and speakers for around that price. If you already have a dvd player make sure the system has the right audio input, fiber optic or digital coaxial, to match you dvd%26#39;s audio output. If you don%26#39;t have a dvd player, either get a system that has one built in or get one that has the audio output to match the system you buy.

I'm looking for the loudets speakers I can get for my money any suddegestions?

Answer:

For the most bang for your buck, I would suggest a pair of older (10-15 years) Cerwin Vegas. Anything from their DX series. Preferably DX-7 or DX-9. The DX-9s are 4 ohm speakers so you need an amp that can take the punishment. They are also huge (90 pounds) so shipping will kill you. You might get lucky and find a pair in a second hand store for next to nothing. Work on your spelling first. Learn lipreading. You%26#39;ll need it. Look for efficiently rated speakers as given the same input wattage, they%26#39;ll play louder. Efficiency is usually stated as a number such as 90dB. You%26#39;ll want a number %26gt; 90. Also look for a large maximum amplifier power. Look for a 250-300 wpc type rating. A good choice to lose hearing is Klipsch. Very efficient and play crazy loud. You%26#39;ll also have to buy a high current amplifier to achieve ear bleeding levels. Don%26#39;t skimp here as you%26#39;ll damage your speakers with inadequate power. i have a set of jamo d365%26#39;s that do a good job of rattling the neighbours crockery-but make sure you have the amp to back them up. 1) No offense, but there is a "Check Spelling" button for a reason

2) You need to specify what exactly your situation is and what you want the loudest possible speakers for

3) You should also specify your cost expectation

If you want the absolute loudest, regardless of quality, you can find crap at your local flea market that will fit the bill for only a few bucks, but, you get what you pay for.

I'm looking to buy a DVD Recorder/player for my television that has onboard memory as well.?

What is a good make to buy?

Answer:

I am not sure what you mean by on board memory. If you are thinking about a DVD Recorder with TiVo I am not sure.

But I do have a great DVD Recorder that can handle all discs (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW). It has a timer where I set the timer, I am thinking, at least one week in advance, or tell it to always record during a certain day of the week or a certain time. It can record 1 hour, 90 minutes, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours (the six hour doesnt look so good so I wouldnt suggest using that setting).

It%26#39;s a Sony RDR GX300. You can buy it from the link below and also from amazon.com (I think) and circuitcity.com Just go TiVo and save yourself the next big purchase. Just get the one panasonic makes. I have it and it works great. I am at work however and don%26#39;t have the model # with me.

Yamaha YST-FSW100S Subwoofer - £109

PS3 60GB (Region 1) for DVD and Blu-Ray - £305

You can just use any multi-region cheap DVD player for UK bought DVD%26#39;s.

With my setup, you do not need to have wires all around the room for surround sound as the Yamaha is designed to do this wirelessly from the single 42 speaker unit. Try this link - http://www.avreview.co.uk/

Post threads or just look at the reviews for all your audio video needs!! Have a look at the Richer Sounds web page a google will find it, My mistake was mixing speakers, I have Mission front and rears and a KEF centre I wish I had gone for all KEF%26#39;s but my speakers + bass unit =£420, AV amp Yamaha DSP-AX640SE £400. it is a couple of years old now so I expect the new and improved version is out, if you say £180 for cables and leads that leaves you £2,000 for the T.V. etc. Much as I respect Richer Sounds I would not by a T.V. from them, I envy you it is such fun opening the boxes and trying to work out what goes where. Good hunting. Try -

I'm thinking about buying a projection tv, as in the kind that shows on the wall. Do you know ab

Answer:

I have the type of projector you refer to. It is a Sharp DLP about 4 yrs old. This is what you need to know:

You must watch in a darkened room.

You must have a real screen -- a white wall won%26#39;t cut it. You could get by with a painted surface on a very flat, very smooth material, and mount that on a wall. But a commercial screen (Da-Lite, Stewart Filmscreen) is superior.

The projector bulb lasts 1500 hours (some newer ones last longer) and the cost to replace can be as high as $500

The best projectors for HDTV. in a reasonable price range, are made by Sharp, InFocus, Optoma. The next step up would be Marantz DLP or Sony SXRD. Prices range from about $3500 (Sharp) to $10,000 (Sony). Then add the cost of the screen ($500 to $2500 depending on size, quality and features).

Finally: there is no better way to watch TV! Be ready to replace the $200 light bulb! I don%26#39;t know alot or really anthing about them but,you are so lucky you can get one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

They also need picture adjustments by a service tech to keep picture sharp. First, the picture must be projected onto a completely white background. Otherwise, you will not be able to see the image properly.

Second, The room must be fairly dark in order to see the picture.

Third, bulb replacement can cost between $100 and $500.

Fourth, service must be done on the projector by a service tech fairly often to keep it working properly.

Look in the manual for the tv, find out what company actually made the tv. Odds are, it was Sylvania or someone like it, use the code for that company, and it%26#39;ll work. Call comcast for codes (probabaly won%26#39;t have %26#39;em) If not, there%26#39;s a long process in finding the code.

tv=%26gt;press and hold setup until tv blinks twice=%26gt;enter on remote 991=%26gt;press power. If set does not turn off, you have to alternate pressing the power button and television button until television turns off.

If and when it turns off, press setup button to lock in code.

Hope that helps, used to work for Comcast.

Installing an A/B audio switch?

My new house has ceiling speakers throughout that are wired to a receiver in a closet. I also have a 7.1 home theater system. I would like to use the house speakers in my living room as both house speakers and my mids for my 7.1 system. The living room has a volume control in the wall for the house speakers. How and where do I install an A/B audio switch to be able to use these speakers for both receivers? Also, any suggestions for switches? Thanks! Chip

Answer:

Be carefull with this project! Your a/b switch should be connected on the source wires to the closet receiver and the type of switch depends on the wire connections and wattage limitations.

My concern is what the resistance of you ceiling speakers and volume control is. Most modern receivers have a switch to go from 4 ohm to 8 ohm and don%26#39;t like to be hooked up to speakers that aren%26#39;t meant for them. Most internal speakers / intercom systems run with in line audio transformers and with various resistance levels This enables them to work with thin wire over long distances. Things may work when first hooked up but may put serious ware on the receiver.

is 1081i better for HDTV or 720p?

Answer:

Both formats are high definition. The resolution of 1080i is just twice that of 720p, but that only applies to still images. If the image moves, the edges are 540p. This is why 720p is preferred for sports, and probably why ABC Fox and ESPN selected that format. Standard definition is 480i, enhanced definition (a misnomer) is 480p

Note that all fixed-pixel displays (LCD, DLP, Plasma) display in progressive ("p") mode. So a 1920x1080 pixel display always displays in 1080p even if the source image is 1080i. The set internally "de-interlaces" the 1080i picture. When done well, this works well, but sets vary in quality of their de-interlacing process, and one done poorly is no better than 540p (for moving images). 1080i is a higher resolution so it should have a clearer picture. 720p is typically better not because of resolution, but because it is progressive. Progressive is always better than interlaced. Progressive paints the lines consecutively top to bottom, smoother picture and fluid motion. 1080i is 1080 interlaced lines, which means it paints 540 lines per a pass. Interlaced lines cause jagged edges and choppy video in fast movement. At a high resolution as 1080i, the jagged edges will not be as visible as see 480i.

If possible, stick to the progressive signals 480p, 720p and 1080p. Between 720p an 1080i, the average person can%26#39;t tell the difference unless your face is right up to the screen. Both signals still look phenomenal on a HDTV. 1080i is much higher resolution that 720p. 720 is standard broadcast definition. The best picture right now is 1080p. Yes, 1080i is better if your HDTV offers this

is 3.1 speaker able to plug in to laptop?

Answer:

Sure. A laptop has the same 1/8 inch speaker/headphone connector as a desktop. Many people consider the sound quality from a laptop%26#39;s soundcard to be inferior so you might want to think about getting a USB out board soundcard. They really aren%26#39;t that expensive-

Is 557 by 234 a good quality picture?

For a projector. I know its not HD or SD but, will it be as good as a regular TV?

Answer:

Not really, no. Although it depends what you want to project, and how large. Your computer monitor is probably 800x600 or 1024x768. Older computer monitors (around the time of Windows 3.1 or Windows 95) tended to be 640x480. 234 pixels is a very small height for showing any significant level of detail, and 557 is quite poor too. A regular TV (SDTV) is 640x480 in otherwords 480 lines of resolution. HDTV is 720 or 1080 lines of resolution. At 557x234 resolution, it will be equivalent to VCR quality.

If you are looking at a projector, then I would don%26#39;t buy it. If you are trying to find a projector for less than $500, there are many refurbished or used projectors that sell for less and you can get 800x600 (SVGA) or 1024x768 (XGA) projector. For $500 these days, you can pick up a 720x480 or 800x600 new projector. For $1000, you can pick up a 1280x720 or 1024x768 new projector. You probably will not be happy. It will show you lot of distortion

is 7.1 surround sound the most amount of speakers on a system you can get?

Answer:

You could hook up as many speakers as you wanted to that but you%26#39;d still only have 7 distinct channels (and a subwoofer channel). This is probably the highest comsumer surround sound format out at the moment. HD-DVD/BluRay players support 8 distinct audio channels so that would still be the same amount of speakers. NHK has developed a 22.2 surround sound format to accompany their Ultra High Definition Video 4320p technology but don%26#39;t expect to see this out for a decade or two.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22.2...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/surround_so... No, but it%26#39;s the accepted best format at this time...

Is a dvd player that upconverts worth the investing in? I've heard the only work on movies you b

Answer:

Had the same questions 2 weeks ago, and I don%26#39;t think it is worth the money to spend, I am currently in a holding pattern for the HD-DVD%26#39;s prices to come down, you can find them now for around 400$, maybe after the new year or mid 2007 the price will come down. The upconverting feature works on all DVD movies (rent or buy). But, I wouldn%26#39;t waste your money on it. It helps marginally. Save your money and wait until the HD format war is over because that is true HD. Upconverting is pseudo HD, not true HD.

Also, you need to have an HDTV and HDMI to take full advantage of the upconverting DVD players. If you don%26#39;t have one or the other, you will not even be able to tell the difference from a standard progressive DVD player. 100-200 for a good player.

20-well infinity for the HDMI cable

Small investment that I think is worth it

I have an expensive Denon DVD player that on does progressive scan. I hooked up a $100 samsung DVD player to my Samsung 4272 plasma with a $100 HDMI cable and was amazed at the difference

It wasn%26#39;t sharper at least not that I could see but the colors just seemed to pop off the screen. Darks looked nicer and had more detail in the shadows. Not bad for 200$ but I wish I would have bought that Oppo DVD player because it seems to get some amazing reviews.

and they do work for all DVDs The up-conversion works on all DVDs. I started looking into this subject today after I got an upconverter DVD player - and discovered that the only way it would upconvert is via using the HDMI connector. If your TV does not have HDMI, you are looking at more than just the player.

My problem is that my TV has just a DVI. So, I will also need an HDMI %26lt;-%26gt; DVI converter, but I would lose the audio in the process! Plus, that converter from Monster is about 35. The area behind my TV is becoming a nest of cables. You can rent it from

http://www.anewindia.com/Ad Yes, you can get some cheap upconverting dvd players around $115 bucks. I would definitely suggest in getting one if you have a high resolution LCD or Plasma. Might as well spend the extra few bucks.

is a monster subwoofer cable worth buying? will it give me tighter bass?

ive upgrade all my cable to monster optical etc but i still have this subwoofer cable that came with my home theatre do you think an upgraded subwoofer cable will help at all?

Answer:

Even the best audiophiles in the world have a hard time telling what cables are what. Studies aside. Where cables get more expensive, are in the purity of the copper, and the number of strands in the line. More importantly is that you make sure the AWG of the wire is suited for the current your sub is drawing over the line.

Tighter bass is more determined by the type of the box, and the Damping of the amplifier. However, lower the impedance by using thicker cables, over shorter distances aids in the damping coefficient of the amplifier in relation to sub bass frequencies. Your Speaker, Cabinet, and Amplifier are far more likely to determine your tight bass response than what you%26#39;ll ever notice from your cables. The Monster subwoofer cable will give you better bass. But you get what you pay for, the quality of the cable is very expensive.

If you have the money for it, and arent quite satisfied with your bass, buy it. If you dont mind your current cord, you may want to keep to that for a while longer. Generally speaking, no.

Once you are using HEAVY cable to connect your speakers, the rest is mainly marketing and bullsh**.

Having been VERY good friends with a guy who used to do loads of reviews for Hi-Fi mags in the UK, he showed me some of the results from doing "blind tests" where folks listened to one set-up then the next and then the next. Each time, same CD track, same amp/speakers. All that was changing was the cable.

Is a more expensive high definition video cable that much better than a less expensive one?

Answer:

With analog connections like component video, there may be some slight difference in picture quality but the big difference will be with the cables ability to reject interference.

Digital cables, on the other hand, are a totally different story: The expensive ones don%26#39;t do anything the cheap ones don%26#39;t. Aside from warranties, there%26#39;s no difference in performance. Here%26#39;s a little secret Monster Cable doesn%26#39;t want you to know: Digital doesn%26#39;t care. As long as a digital signal is reaching the other end of the cable, it%26#39;s as good as it can be. With digital, you either have a signal or you don%26#39;t, there%26#39;s no in between, so unlike analog cables, in which cable quality DOES matter, the cheapest HDMI cable will perform just as well as the most expensive one. Usualy yes cuz the shielding is better on high grade cables than on cheap ones thus preventing normal interference signals to be fed to your tv set In most cases, no, you will not notice a difference. Cable companies are just playing on peoples lack of knowledge or insecurities to increase profit, for the most part. There%26#39;s some minimum level of quality, but if you%26#39;re talking very short runs of 6 feet or so, it doesn%26#39;t matter if you buy a $10 HDMI cable from monoprice.com or a $120 cable made by Monster. High definition is *digital*--either it gets through or it doesn%26#39;t. Buy a expensive cable and compare it to a cheap one. If you see a difference, then there is one. Personally, I don%26#39;t see any difference, however, expensive ones are made with better quality parts. Its like comparing a Mercedes to a Honda. Just because a Benz is made with better parts, doesn%26#39;t mean it will last longer. Only get the expensive one if you have a long distance to run.

is a plasma bigger than lcd tv or not - by rahul?

Answer:

I THINK PLASMA IS BIGGER THAN ICD TV B"CAUSE WE HAVE PLASMA TV AND IT IS QUITE HUGE dunno They both can be any size screen they want - the difference is just the technology used to make the picture. All things being equal, LCD will make a CLEARER picture. Rahul, dono TV%26#39;s alag alag size me aate hai, jaise LCD 13 inches se 55 inches tak aata hai to plasma 32 inches se 142 inchesh tak aata hai- to aakhir me Plasma hi bada hua na? Plasma power aur money dono jyada khata hai, LCD sasta hai - long life hai. Yes it is. Plasma tvs are available to be bigger than the lcd ones, this is one of the main advantages of plasma tvs.. Besides the contrast ratio and color accuracy, motion tracking options are sustained in plasma tvs. In contrast, plasmas produce more heat and they have shorter display life. gaand me leke dekh le???????

haaa haaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaahaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

no it is not...... Typically, LCD televisions are anywhere from 20" to 40" and plasma televisions are 40" and up.

If you%26#39;re looking at an LCD, I recommend the Sharpo Aquos while if you are after a plasma, I prefer anything by Panasonic or Pioneer. they can be of any size they differ in quality of picture which u get

Is a resistor an electrical check valve?

I have two stereo amps connected to one speaker. a switch box is not applicable due to the junction being in the attic. i need to keep the current from traveling back to the second amp. what can i use to only allow the amp to feed power one way to the speaker and not through the speaker and back out to the other amp?

Both amps are 100watts per channel.

Answer:

You can%26#39;t do it with diodes because the current to a speaker is alternating, not direct.

You can use a remote 2 pole switch box (controlled by a relay).

It may be simpler however to re-run the speaker wire back down from the attic and make the junction accessible with a simple switch box. Run amp A wire to amp B, and put both into a switch box.

You could also get really slick and have the power on Amplifier A control a relay switch that disconnects the speaker wire from Amp B. Conversely for the other Amp. This would make the switch automatic, and safe. If both amps are on, then the speaker is entirely disconnected. I doubt you%26#39;re looking for something this complicated though. You need diodes. use diodes ..they only allow unidirectional flow of current A resistor limits current in an electrical circuit.A volume control is a variable resistor.A diode will prevent current from traveling the wrong way.But if you only have one speaker ,one amp should suffice .You could and should add another speaker if the signal is a stereo one.Otherwise you are asking for trouble diodes or not!It is not just a question of power from the amps if it%26#39;s volume you%26#39;re after .Bigger speaker or extra speaker you will push more air .On any stereo or twin guitar amp disconnect one of the speakers and hear the volume get cut in half.Hooking two amps to one speaker is doubtful for a lot of reasons.Good Luck! Oh brother Diodes won%26#39;t work. As stated above they limit current to one direction as in DC, Audio is essentially AC alternating current so with a diode you would have no sound.

A resistor will only drop the power in any direction.

The only way to do it is to wire a switch in somehow. That would be determined by you amplifier placements and the speaker location and only you know that.

is a satellite speaker wireless?

Answer:

The satellite speaker is simply your surround speakers. they can be wired or wireless. satellite is not a type of speaker, more the placement. YES No not necessarily you would need to check the technical specification for the speaker determine wireless capability. satellite speaker is a speaker that is in another room , part of your house, maybe outside (old school hifi let you pick %26#39;main%26#39; or %26#39;satellite%26#39; speakers)

your Surround speakers are usually referred to as what they are "rear", "front", "side" etc

Although satellite sems to be croppingup in reference to surround speaker designation The term satellite just means they go around the room wherever you put them, as in they are like satellites to the TV. They can be wireless but it depends on the speakers themselves. some are some are not. The word satellite here means it position in relation to the main unit or audiosystem It can be wired (more common) or wireless

Is an upconversion DVD player close to HD quality on a HD TV?

Answer:

Absolutely not... an HD upconversion is nothing more than blowing the standard NTSC picture up to the 1920x1080 resolution. You simply won%26#39;t get the detail and quality because the data is not there.

In a few years HD and Bluray will be cheaper. It just extrapolates some extra pixels. You%26#39;re not actually getting a better picture, but it will look better if you have an exorbitantly large TV. While it isnt true high quality of 1080P, it takes the 480P picture and scales it to 1080i. While you will still see some pixeling here and there, it is a better picture that just a straight 480P. In my book its good enough for now until the two standards are finalized (HD-DVD and Blueray). No sense in getting stuck with the obsolete player in a few years unless you have $900+ for the new player.

Is anyone expecting 5.1 channel music to take off soon?

Like DVD audio or SACD? Is one or the other leading the industry?

I mean in terms of music reproduction vs stereo, and in terms of artists recording and being available in that format?

Answer:

I beg to differ...audophiles myself are well aware of the possibilities of surround music and would enthusiastically embrace them but for two things:

1) Engineers do not know how to do surround music mixes. You are correct that a concert should be %26#39;in front%26#39; of you but most mixes I%26#39;ve heard insist on scattering instruments and voices around the entire room. Note to engineers: I listen to a concert from the audience position, not the middle of the stage. You would think they%26#39;d have learned from the quad failure of the 70%26#39;s that we want %26#39;real%26#39; sound, not %26#39;surreal%26#39;.

2) Ever since the proverbial Beta vs. VHS war, people such as myself have become reluctant to endorse a format that has direct competition. The consumer electronics industry has shot itself in the foot so many times due to proprietary formats and just plain greed that new technologies have become a catch-22; no one will buy them until they%26#39;ve caught on and they won%26#39;t catch on till people buy them. Both have been around for awhile and neither has taken off like the original CD did. The biggest issue is that most true stereophiles who listen to music only listen in stereo. So the whole surround sound thing just never appealed to them for music. The idea is to produce a concert as best as you can. Concerts only project in one direction. I have a feeling that SACD and DVD Audio was nearly doomed before it ever got to the runway (in a manner of speaking). Regular stereo is plenty good enough.

Is blue ray really better than dvd?

Does blue ray disc have a better picture than dvd? Should I buy dvds or blue ray discs for my ps3

Answer:

I watched my first blu ray (crank) the other day and i must say, it is pretty amazing. I had to watch the movie twice because the first time i was more into all the details that i notice in the 1080p resolution that i cant see in lower res. I%26#39;d say yes, blu-rays really are that much better, sure they cost a tad bit more, not a huge difference if yo ubuy from amazon or e-bay. and the above post is right about the disc space. Blu rays can hold up to 50gb of space, HD-DVD can hold up to 30gb i believe, and standard dvd%26#39;s are normally 4.7gb. Do note though that you must have a 1080p display (that accepts 1080p connection) and an HDMI cable to play Blu Ray at its highest quality. I%26#39;d say, if you have those two things, to buy atleast one movie and see for yourself. I personally am hooked on it and can%26#39;t watch any other type of DVD Blue Ray is one of the formats for a high definition DVD. You must have a machine that can play Blue Ray. Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) discs have 5 TIMES the picture quality of regular old DVDs...Click this link for a comparison: http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/... Yes! Blue ray is the only format that can output 1080p. Which is the highest resolution available for current TV%26#39;s. The picture quality is GREAT!! As of yet HD tv cant even brodcast in this resolution!!

Buy Blu-Ray! You have the equipment for it so use it! dvd is the standard format right now, but since you got a ps3 go buy the new blu ray movies they have for it! blu ray is the new stuff man. amazing picture quality. Blue Ray discs have aprox 5 times (aprox 50gb) the data storage of normal dvd movies(aprox 9-10gb)

Is blu-ray better than hd-dvd? why?

Answer:

Because the Blu-Ray Disc technology

currently allows for a higher resolution

(i.e. 1080p as opposed to 1080i for HD DVD).

_ Holds more information. Off the top of my head, BluRay is about 56 gigabytes, HdDVD is about 42... Less storage means less info on the disk, ergo less detail in a picture.

Unlike Betamax, Sony might win this format war. I would expect the DVD war to go to hd-dvd. It is like the vhs war with betamax, which was the Sony system. Blu-ray is also a Sony system, and it is too proprietary for other companies to take advantage of.

I would hold off on the high def DVDs for a while. It doesn%26#39;t matter who is better. As far as picture quality is concerned they are equal. same goes for

sound quality. Right now HD-DVD players are less expensive, but Blu-ray offers more releases as more studios are releasing movies on blu-ray. I am waiting to see who comes out on top, and for prices to fall. If you want your DVD%26#39;s to fill the screen consider a DVD player that converts regular DVD%26#39;s to HDTV. They are much less expensive, and can hold you over until the battle is finished. Blue-Ray is the superior technology but unfortunately it has the disorganized backing of Sony. That alone is enough to make it fail.

Sony is notoriously mismanaged and stingy with their source code making it difficult for 3rd party developers to utilize their technology.

Is Blu-ray worth the $$$?

I am not a techie, but I am not ready to jump on the Blu-Ray bandwagon.

Beta - OK but short lived

VHS - Better than Beta and made Beta Obsolete

Laser Disc - Better quality, but had to flip over a big disc. Didn%26#39;t take over from VHS

DVD- Better than LD and took over the home video market... DVD players started out at $400 or more. Now they are really cheap.

Blu-Ray??? Will they just be a stepping stone to something else? Will they make DVD Obsulete? Do we really want/need something so clear that we can see Hollywood Actor%26#39;s zits? Will the Blu-Ray players end up costing $20 if we just wait? Will the "clearer, better" picture make any difference in how much we enjoy a movie?

I think it%26#39;s just a bunch of hype to get us to spend $$$$$$

But I could be wrong.......

Answer:

At this point in time, it%26#39;s not worth spending the money on either Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Neither has market dominance yet, and there are many bugs in the latest players. In addition, unless you have a 1080P compatible TV (whose price is still plummeting) , you%26#39;re not going to unleash either technologies%26#39; full capability. Blu-ray, granted they don%26#39;t screw up the marketing, should come out on top for numerous reasons. First, 9 of 10 major movie studios have signed onto to Blu-ray while only 4 of 10 have signed onto HD-DVD. (yes that makes sense because some have signed onto both) Also, Disney has signed exclusively with Blu-ray, and they control a large portion of the movie industry. Second, the menus navigate faster with Blu-ray. Finally, the discs can hold a lot more data.

is converting vhs to dvd cost/time effective?

Answer:

No.

DVDs are cheap. Considering the time you will spend converting, the money you will spend on equipment to convert and the fact that VHS tapes are inferior quality-wise and that inferiority will transfer to the DVD, you are better off just to re-buy your movies in DVD format.

Of course if you have irreplaceable home movies on VHS, it is in your best interest to convert those to DVD. You%26#39;ll have way more space on your shelves and they want to stop making VCH tapes inthe next 10 to 15 years. yes you dont have to rewind it at the end dvds these days are more popular and easier to store I suppose it mostly depends on the sentimental value of the VHS tapes... No. It%26#39;s a rather long and tedious process because you have to play the VHS tape in order for the DVD to record it. I tried it for a couple of hours, and then I just gave up. But if you want to save space and make it convenient to carry around, then go ahead and do it.

Just note that if the film has a lot of sentimental value to you, it will last longer on VHS than DVD, if you store the VHS tape in an ideal environment.
